Safe at home
How to Secure Your Home
Layered security — strong doors, good lighting, smart tech and good habits — keeps intruders out and your family safe.
Doors and locks
Most break-ins happen through the front door.
- Install Grade 1 deadbolts with 3-inch strike plate screws
- Reinforce door frames and use solid-core exterior doors
- Add a bar or pin to sliding glass doors
- Rekey all locks after moving in
Lighting and landscaping
Motion-activated lights around entries and dark corners deter intruders. Keep shrubs trimmed below window level so there's nowhere to hide.
Cameras and alarms
A visible doorbell camera and alarm signage are strong deterrents. Professional monitoring adds 24/7 response and may lower insurance premiums.
Everyday habits
Lock up even when home, don't advertise trips on social media, use timers for lights while away, and secure your Wi-Fi network with a strong password.
Fire and safety
Place smoke detectors on every level and in each bedroom, add CO detectors near sleeping areas, and keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
